From the iconic tea fields of Shirakawa in Uji, Japan, our Shirakawa Asahi Matcha represents the pinnacle of Japanese tea artistry. This rare single-cultivar matcha, grown under the expertise of Mr. Kiyoharu Tsuji, delivers a luxurious flavor experience that reflects its meticulous cultivation.

The Asahi cultivar is revered for its rich umami depth and natural sweetness, traits enhanced by 50 days of careful shading.

How It Tastes

This matcha greets you with a smooth, creamy richness and a hint of sweet almond. Its umami is deep and satisfying, balanced by subtle notes of custard-like sweetness. The finish is velvety and lingering, rounding out the experience with an elegant touch.

A cultivar is a specific variety of a plant that has been selectively bred or naturally developed for certain characteristics, like flavor, color, or how well it grows in specific conditions. For matcha, the cultivar of the tea plant affects its taste, aroma, and even how smooth or creamy it feels when you drink it. Think of it like different types of apples—Granny Smith, Fuji, or Honeycrisp—all are apples but have unique flavors and uses. Similarly, matcha cultivars offer distinct profiles, making each one special. Some cultivars are easier to grow and more resilient, making them popular with farmers, while others are more delicate and require extra care, resulting in rare and unique flavors.

Creamy and delicious

Going through the full Johnny Matcha lineup and enjoying brewing this one up extra thick for my morning bowl of matcha.

The quality is so good, I have to try it against other companies matcha to remember what less refined and less smooth matcha tastes like.

If you are already a fan of gongfu tea this tea will be a nice addition to your tea collection and get you tiptoeing down the matcha road.
